The film looks at the life and career of actor Leonard Nimoy, and his iconic character Mr. Spock. It includes interviews with cast, crew and people connected with Star Trek, fans at conventions, as well as personal memories.Nimoy died at the age of 83. The documentary was a tribute film produced and shot by Nimoy's son, Adam. Adam started the project before Leonard died. Leonard died of lung cancer after 30 years of smoking. He was from Boston, but worked in LA for 17 yrs. He came to California in 1949 to make a career in acting. Leonard's parents were not supportive of his career choice of becoming an actor and refused to support him in anyway. His brother Mel survives him.Adam's mom was an aspiring housewife who met Leonard backstage at a Hollywood studio and gave up her acting career to be a housewife. They had a girl, Julie, in 55 and Adam in 56. Leonard did all sorts of jobs in the 60's to support his family. Setting up fish tanks, selling freezers, pet stores, drove a cab, took care of aquariums, vending machines, ice cream parlor, and managing apartment buildings.He also did a series of small acting parts in movies and TV series through 50's and 60's. He was noticed by Gene Roddenberry who had a role in mind for Leonard in a pilot for a sci-fi series. Prior to Star Trek, Leonard never had a job for more than 2 weeks. And Gene offered him the part in their first meeting.The studio had contracted an external company for special effects, which included Spock's ears. But they could not deliver and Freddie Philips, Leonard's make up guy, had to step in at the last minute to fix the ears that became central to Spock's character for generations.
NCB did not buy the first pilot. They found it too "cerebral". They agreed to a 2nd pilot and advised Gene to replace the entire cast, including Leonard. But Gene stuck to Leonard. Also in their promo pamphlet, NBC decided to straighten Spock's eyebrows and soften its pointed ears as they felt their audience in the bible belt won't accept a character that looked like the Satan.
Interviews of William Shatner, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Jim Parsons, Jason Alexander, Neil DeGrasse Tyson and J.J. Abrams.The new cast included William Shatner as Captain Kirk. Leonard believes that the playfulness of William allowed Spock to play the more serious character, something that he was unable to do with William's predecessor Jeff Hunter (who was a quieter actor). The triumvirate between McCoy, Spock and Kirk worked brilliantly and NBC loved the 2nd pilot. The first season was shot in 1966. Variety mag said in its first review that Star Trek won't work.Leonard played Spock as a Vulcan who tried to keep his emotions in check & not as a Vulcan who had no emotions. Plus, in the internal character tension, he adopted a minimalist style of acting (hand movements and such), so that when he did react, it became a very big deal.
Many fans identified with Spock as he was the outsider on a ship crewed by humans. and everybody feels like an outsider sometimes.It was Spock who came up with the ideas for the Vulcan finger hold and the mind melds and the famous Vulcan greeting "Live Long and Prosper" (this was an adoption of a Jewish religious salute which Leonard picked up in his childhood).
Pretty soon sacks of fan mail started arriving at Leonard's doorsteps, along with fans themselves, who wanted to meet Spock. There was a natural competition between William and Leonard, but Roddeberry explained to William that if Spock was popular that meant Kirk was popular and which meant that the show was popular, which is what everyone wanted. From that point on, William was OK with Spock's popularity. Women found Spock's silence, oddly attractive.NBC failed to support the show for a fourth season. Leonard did a stint with the Mission Impossible series but left when he got bored. Did a part in "Fiddler on the Roof". 70's was the decade of theatre work for Leonard, along with several episodes hosting "in search of".
In 1973 NBC decided to do an animated series of Star Trek but invited only 4 people from the original cast for the voices. Leonard refused unless the entire cast was re-hired. Some fans created a video of the hidden gay attraction between Spock and Kirk. Spock started going to conventions and always had time for his fans.
Adam Nimoy was a lawyer, but the job was not fulfilling to him. Leonard helped him make a career change into direction.After the show was canceled, NBC had no legal right to use Leonard picture for commercial branding purposes. But NBC continued to do so for 10 years & didn't pay Leonard for 5 of those 10 years. In 1975 Leonard sued paramount. At the same time Paramount decided to do Star Trek The Motion Picture, and Leonard won't sign till Paramount settled the lawsuit. Ultimately the studio settled.The script for the first movie was bad. The focus shifted from being a character-oriented series to an effects oriented movie. In Star Trek II, Spock was lured by the promise of the "best death scene ever". Spock thought it was the end of Star Trek and accepted the role. But after the end, Paramount approached him for another one and Leonard bargained with them to direct the third movie. he got it, but not happy as the studio kept a tight leash on Leonard. So, the fourth movie, Leonard asked to be a director with creative liberty & was granted the permission to make his own Star Trek movie (the one about the whale sounds).Then Leonard directed Three Men and a Baby, and it was major hit. But the next movie "The Good Mother" bombed big time at the box office. Leonard started drinking heavily. in 1989 he married Susan, his 2nd wife and was really happy and decided to go into his own recovery from his drinking addiction.
Then JJ Abrams came along and reset the star Trek franchise and offered Leonard a role in it. Leonard was supportive and gave it his best.
Adam and Leonard fell out with each other during the 90's when Adam basically took to pot & became a hippie. Even in the 2000's they were completely estranged from one another. Adam had just ended an 18-year marriage and was at a low point of his life. In 2008, he reconnected with Leonard and later married Martha. 5 months after the wedding, Martha was diagnosed with cancer and Leonard supported him fully.
Leonard died in 2015.

Picking up 15 years after the events of the first Blob movie, an oil pipeline engineer and geologist named Chester Hargis (Godfrey Cambridge) returns to his suburban Los Angeles home from a three-month excursion to Alaska near the North Pole, bringing with him a small sample of a mysterious frozen substance uncovered by a bulldozer on a job site... an off-camera story which he tells his wife Marian (Marlene Clark). Not aware that the substance is a piece of the Blob from the original 1958 incident in Pennsylvania, Chester stores the substance in a small metal container in his home freezer prior to taking in to the laboratory to be analyzed. When Marian takes the metal container out of the freezer and leaves it unattended on the kitchen counter, both she and Chester forget about it since Chester is planning to go away on a week-long fishing trip which he has stored several cans of beer in his fishing container. With both Chester and Marian distracted by their bickering, the substance thaws out and a red gelatinous substance oozes from the metal canister after consuming a small house fly. The small blob then quietly engulfs their pet kitten. Seemingly energized by the sustenance, the blob oozes out into the back yard, where Marian is searching for the kitten. As the creature grasps Marian's legs to engulf her, she faints in terror and succumbs, unknown to Chester, who is watching television in the living room. Soon after, family friend Lisa Clark (Gwynn Gilford) enters the house to find Chester sitting in his reclining chair being dissolved/digested by the ever-expanding blob. Horrified, Lisa races to her boyfriend Bobby Hartford (Robert Walker Jr.) at his farm for help, but when they return to the Hargis house, no evidence of the tragedy remains.Meanwhile, bowling alley owner Edward Fazio (Richard Stahl), having spotted Lisa speeding, reports her to the police and follows her to Chester's house to admonish her. When Lisa tries to explain to the police that her friends are missing, they search the house while Mr. Fazio insists that they arrest her for speeding. After finding nothing suspicious, the police release Bobby and Lisa.Elsewhere, two teenagers, a guitar playing hippy named Randy (Randy Stonehill) and his girlfriend (Cindy Williams), are smoking marijuana in a storm drainage culvert, when policeman Zed (Sid Haig) confronts them. When Deputy Ted Sims (Ted Baar) arrives and tells Deputy Zed to report back to the police station, he tells the two teenagers that they are under arrest for possession of a controlled substance. Seeing the red, viscous material dripping into the culvert behind Deputy Sims's head, the teenagers warn the policeman, but he suspects they are trying to trick him and ignores their pleas. Within seconds, the blob engulfs Sims and the teenagers.Later that evening, the blob seeps into a hair salon through the sewer system, swallowing the customer's head (John Houser) and hairdresser's arms (Shelley Berman) during a shampoo at the sink.Meanwhile, Bobby and Lisa return to her house, where dozens of Bobby's friends are waiting to throw him a surprise birthday party. As the festivities ensue, Lisa, upset that Bobby does not believe her story, asks him to take her to his ranch.In another part of town, a middle-aged Russian man (Tiger Joe Marsh) is taking a bath when the blob slips under the door and swallows his pet dog as the man watches helplessly. Petrified and naked, the man runs into the street, where police pick him up for exposing himself. Back at the police station, reports of missing persons are piling up, including a group at a bar that the blob consumes (off-camera).Boy Scout Taskmaster Adleman (Dick Van Patten) is with his troupe hiking through the area and observing the events that are unfolding around them. Adleman becomes a victim himself (off-camera) when he confronts the blob in a field near the late Chester's house, but most of his fellow Boy Scouts escape.At Bobby's ranch, the blob, having already consumed three hobos (Larry Hangman, Burgess Meredith and Del Close), is growing exponentially after consuming live chickens and possibly some livestock, and quickly envelopes Bobby's truck when the couple arrives. Knowing what fate awaits them, Lisa screams for help, but they cannot escape. Suddenly during the tumult, the blob recedes for no apparent reason.Bobby and Lisa race to a gas station (where the Blob has apparently been and consumed, off-camera, the attendant and an unknown number of patrons) to call Sheriff Jones (Richard Webb) and are told that he is at the bowling tournament. Seeing their friend Joe (Gerrit Graham) and his girlfriend Leslie (Carol Lynley) driving by, Bobby and Lisa describe the horrific monster. Although Leslie is convinced of their sincerity, Joe mocks them in disbelief and drives off in his dune buggy to investigate their claims.As Bobby, Lisa and Leslie make their way to the town bowling tournament to find the sheriff, they are confronted by the blob, which has covered the road and is enveloping Joe and his car. A hysterical Leslie rushes to help Joe, but dies with Joe under the oozing mass.Taking an alternate route, Bobby and Lisa reach the bowling alley, where Bobby uses the loudspeaker to advise everyone to leave the area, but his warning goes unheeded. Angered by the disruption, Fazio orders his bouncer to bring Bobby and Lisa to his office, where they explain the danger. Meanwhile, the blob, having already devoured the bowling alley mechanic, surges down all the lanes toward the terror-stricken people, who run for their lives.Bobby, Lisa and Fazio barricade themselves in a broadcast booth high above the adjacent ice rink, which is closed for repairs, and watch as dozens of people succumb to the fast-flowing blob. Using the speaker system, Bobby tells the sheriff and his men, who are waiting outside, that the blob is a giant single-celled animal that can ooze through cracks. As the sheriff and his men dress in riot gear to prepare to attack the creature, Bobby tries to electrocute it with a live wire, but does not succeed. Jones and his deputy shoot at the creature, which is unharmed and subsequently eats the deputy.Having devoured the remaining public in the facility, the blob seeps into the booth through a hole in the floor. Scrambling to get away from the creature, Bobby knocks over a small refrigerator and spills ice onto the blob, which shrinks from the cold. Realizing that the air conditioner in their truck must have been the reason the blob did not eat them earlier, Bobby and Lisa asks Fazio how to cool the rink to freeze the blob. Meanwhile outside, the sheriff, having lost contact with Bobby, assumes that he and the others have been eaten, and orders his men to dowse the building in gasoline so they can burn the blob, unaware that fire will have little effect on the creature. Inside, Bobby heroically climbs the ropes leading to the rink's switch box. Once the rink's cooling system is on, the blob freezes solid instantaneously.Bobby then runs out of the building just in time to stop the sheriff from setting it ablaze. Minutes later, the sheriff proudly stands on top of the mounds of the frozen blob to give a television interview about the shapeless monster that almost destroyed their town and possibly the world. Just under his feet, a small section of the blob defrosts from the camera light and begins to engulf the sheriff's boot.....THE END?

It is the summer of 1989 in Chicago, Illinois. Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson are getting ready for not a date. She's been very clear that this is not a date, despite him asking her to go on a date almost since the beginning of his summer internship at the corporate law firm where she is a second-year associate, and his advisor. She maintains that it would be inappropriate and a distraction if the two of them went out on a date, so although they are planning to spend time together, it is definitely not a date.Michelle prepares carefully, working to look her best. She lives with her family, and her mother and father tease her about making herself look pretty for not a date. She replies curtly but lovingly that they taught her to always look her best, and maintains that its not a date its a community meeting that sounded interesting, so they are going to it together, but that's it.Barack prepares almost not at all. He is smoking in his cluttered apartment, talking to his grandmother on the phone about the woman hes going to see. She tells him he needs to get going in order not to be late, and he tells her it will be fine, but eventually he hangs up, throws on a dress shirt (no tie) and heads out to his car, a beat-up Datsun Sentra. He smokes nervously in the car until he pulls up near Michelle's house, takes two quick puffs on a cigarette, puts it out, sprays breath spray into his mouth, and then around the car, and heads out to pick her up.He finds Michelle outside her house; he never meets her family. She says that hes late. He says that he was hoping she wouldn't notice. She says that he was late for his first day as an intern at the law firm. He comments sheepishly that she noticed that too. She points out that as his advisor, its her job to notice. She says that they should get to the community meeting, but he says that they have time several hours, in fact, and he was hoping they could go to the museum to see an art exhibit first. Shes mildly upset at this, but he assures her that if she says its not a date, then its not a date until she says it is, and she agrees to go. When she gets in the car, she notices the cigarettes in the ash tray, and a hole in the floorboard. She can see the street beneath her feet.On the way to the museum, they discuss a case at work, where a motion in court has failed. Barack asks if Michelle is upset that the motion failed, and she replies that shes glad it failed. Shes frustrated because she said six months earlier that the motion would fail, and in her mind, the firm wasted six months of effort making the motion because a senior partner didn't listen to her advice to not file the motion in the first place. Barack asks if its really the law firms partners shes frustrated with.At the museum, Barack points out the art of Ernie Barnes. Michelle expresses surprise that he would know anything about art. He responds by describing the history and technique of Ernie Barness art at length, mentioning how it was used in the TV show Good Times, and how it represents African-American culture.Barack gets lunch for them, and they eat sandwiches in a park. Michelle insists on paying him for lunch since this is not a date. After, Barack offers her a slice of pie, saying that its the best, but Michelle doesn't like pie; she likes ice cream chocolate. Barack is surprised that anyone could not like pie, but then says that he doesn't like ice cream, which surprises Michelle. He explains that he worked at a Baskin-Robbins as a youth and pretty much ate his fill of ice cream. Michelle is surprised that Hawaii has Baskin-Robbins, and Barack points out that it is one of the fifty states.They talk about Barack's background: how his white mother married his Kenyan father, but they separated shortly after his birth; how his father wasn't present for his childhood; how his father didn't finish anything in his life, and died in Kenya. Barack is obviously angry with his father.On the way to the community meeting, the topic of Michelle's frustration with the firm comes up again. Barack again suggests that Michelle isn't really upset with the firm, but this time, he goes further. He says that Michelle isn't upset with the firm, since the firm is just doing exactly what it is supposed to do. Instead, he suggests that she is upset with herself for working at the firm instead of doing something more valuable for the community. He says that he knows she wants to do more important work, work that helps people, and that the real source of her frustration is that she has sold out working at the corporate firm. Michelle replies angrily that he is guilty of the same sell-out: he's going to school at Harvard, and his internship is at the same corporate law firm. He is taken aback and apologizes.The two arrive at the community meeting, where Barack is greeted warmly by everyone. One woman sits next to Michelle and describes how her son wanted to be a sailor since he was young, but living on the south side of Chicago, that dream was nearly extinguished. But Barack, she says, would talk to her son about it every time he visited, acting as a father figure to the youth. The woman proudly shows Michelle a picture of her son in a U.S. Sailors outfit, saying that he is in the Navy, visiting all sorts of places and living his dream because of Barack.The topic for the day is the failed attempt to get city approval and funding for a community center. Everyone is upset because they put in so much effort with nothing to show for it. The speaker, a young man and friend of Barack's, is having a hard time keeping the crowd together on the topic. Eventually, in near desperation, he gives the floor to Barack, who proceeds to mesmerize the crowd. He says that they have to keep working to figure out how to get what they want. He says that there are city council members who want to help them, but asks why they don't. Eventually, someone in the audience suggests that maybe its because the city council members think the outcome is already determined, and they don't want to waste their time on a lost cause. Barack leaps on that idea and points out that the first speaker has funding commitments for the community center, which is more than they had when they first put in the proposal. He says that they have to look at the situation from the council members point of view, which is something that a good friend (he nods to Michelle) taught him just that day.When they leave the community meeting, Michelle accuses Barack of knowing that he would speak at the meeting, casting himself in a good light for their not a date. Barack admits that he had a good idea that he would be speaking, but laughs it off, and Michelle seems okay with it.The two have dinner and discuss their history further, including their religious beliefs both profess to have no formal religion, but to be spiritual. Barack describes how he spent time in Indonesia with his mother before moving back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents. He admits to smoking a lot of marijuana in high school. He describes how he dated a white woman for two years in college, but says that when he went to meet her family, even though they were welcoming toward him, he just didn't see himself fitting in. Michelle describes how her grandfather was unwilling to go into debt to help finance her fathers education, so he didn't finish college and had to take a manual labor job, but rose through the ranks to become a supervisor. He now has MS (Multiple Sclerosis), which is one of the reasons why Michelle is living at home.The two go to see Spike Lees Do the Right Thing. They both enjoy it greatly, sharing popcorn. During the pivotal scene where the police kill Radio Raheem, Michelle is startled and reflexively takes Barack's hand. On their way out, Barack stops to use the restroom, while Michelle walks outside. She runs into a partner from her law firm, who also saw the movie with his wife. He comments on how inappropriate it was for Mookie to start a riot, and Michelle blankly nods, furtively glancing into the theater, hoping Barack won't come out yet. But Barack arrives just then. Michelle awkwardly tries to explain that they are not on a date, but that they had a community meeting to go to and just happened to go to the movie together. The partner again expresses his disapproval of Mookie's actions. Barack smoothly suggests that Mookie was actually trying to save Sal's life had he not directed the angry mobs violence toward the pizzeria, they would have turned on Sal himself, and likely killed him. The partner is impressed with Barack's insight and compliments him to both his wife and Michelle, and tells Michelle to be sure Barack has a positive experience at the firm.After the partner and his wife leave, Barack expresses his true opinion: that Mookie was simply angry. Michelle rounds on Barack and angrily tells him that this is exactly why she didn't want to go out with him.
